Comments/Feedback on My Experience as an Exchange Student

I had a fun time staying here, I made a lot of new friends, joined a lot of activities, and most importantly, my Japanese 上手になった。

Advice to New Exchange Students

Don’t be afraid to make new friends. Don’t be afraid to speak Japanese, nobody is going to laugh at you for bad grammar. And last but not least, enjoy, cherish the time you’re here, because it will become your good memory for the rest of your life.

My most favorite photo I took in Shizuoka, a station of 大井川鐡道 (Oigawa Railway), on the lake.

Comments/Feedback on My Experience as an Exchange Student

The experience of being an exchange student is like no other! Meeting and making friends from different parts of the world really opens up one’s worldview. I was able to learn people’s values and beliefs from different cultures and learn to understand just how diverse everyone is, and how the diversity in itself is what allows us to yearn to connect with each other more. At Shizuoka University, everyone is so kind and welcoming, and this experience as an exchange student has and will continue to make an impact on my life. Learning the Japanese language and culture by being immersed in the country itself–both studying and exploring by myself in my free time–is such a unique experience I will never forget.

Advice to New Exchange Students

To future exchange students, I think it is really important to keep an open mind as being in a different country and meeting people from different cultures will greatly differ from your own. Also, even if it is scary being in an entirely different country, put yourself out there and allow some spontaneity! Some of the best experiences I have had while studying abroad was from being spontaneous in my plans.

The first photo was taken in Shimada, at the Shizuoka Tea Museum. The
second photo was taken quite recently, at the Abekawa Fireworks Festival!
