Three Elements of the Educational Program

1 Japanese Language Education

Through Japanese language education, we aim to cultivate the Japanese communication skills, understanding of Japanese society and culture, and cross-cultural adjustment skills required for international students to find employment in Japan.

Japanese language courses from beginner to advanced levels are offered year-round at both Shizuoka and Hamamatsu campuses, allowing students to begin learning Japanese immediately upon entering the program.

2 Career Education

International students often struggle in their job-hunting activities with vague motive such as “I want to work in Japan”. Therefore, through career education, we provide lectures to think about “working” and understand the characteristics of the Japanese labor system, the hiring system of Japanese companies, and corporate culture. We also encourage students to participate in employment guidance both on and off campus.

*In the 2022 academic year, an interdisciplinary course, “Thinking about Global Career in Shizuoka”, will be offered. This is hands-on course that includes events to meet with companies both on and off campus, and is recommended for international students who wish to work in Japan. Please check the syllabus for details. https://gakujo.shizuoka.ac.jp/portal/

3 Internships

Internships are a valuable opportunity to experience the real business activities, working styles, and work practices of a company. For international students who lack knowledge of Japanese society, the experience of entering a Japanese company is beneficial for cultivating their ability to understand corporate and industrial activities, selecting a company, and shaping their own careers. Hence, this program provides education and support for internship participation to international students who wish to work for a Japanese company.

Learning and support leading to job readiness

1 Extracurricular activities

Shizuoka University Organization for International Collaboration (SUOIC) promotes collaborative activities between international and Japanese students on campus through the International Exchange Lounge and other activities. We also collaborate with local organizations and groups to conduct homestays and exchange activities with local educational institutions. These are effective opportunities for international students to learn about Japanese society and culture, and we encourage their active participation.

2 Employment Support

In addition to employment counseling services for the entire university, Job fairs are held within Shizuoka University, and in addition to these, some faculties and departments offer employment support. SUOIC supports international students in taking advantage of these opportunities, as well as providing employment support and individual counseling by the Organization. Off-campus, we are also working with the Fujinokuni Regional University Consortium and other local organizations to promote the formation of contacts with companies for international students.
